Value Layers
Value Layers (formerly called Data Projections), just as the name implies, are based on values rather than formulas. Data can be entered for time frames ranging from a single period to as many periods as are contained in your model. Typically value layers are used for historical data and budget data.
Creating a Value Layer
A Value Layer can also be added in FO Designer for an FO Type or FO Instance.
- For either a FO Type or an FO Instance An FO Instance inherits all parameters and any logic(formulas) contained in the FO. Any change in the FO is immediately updated in all instances., click on a Line Item Parameter.

- By default, your value layer will be titled "<name of parameter> Values"
Configuring the Layers
The configuration block contains several settings:
- Annotations -Click the button and type any notes concerning this layer or attach a document.
- Overlay - Select the Overlay for this layer. The default is the Universal Overlay The Universal Overlay is included in every model and cannot be deleted. It has a projection priority is 0.. See Overlays.
- Priority Adjustment - If necessary to avoid a potential conflict, adjust the priority level.
- Configuring the span of time by specifying the start and end dates.
- If permitted, options to view and edit the data on a quarterly or annual basis.
Creating Value Layer Data
Enter the value layer data in the Value Table. The value table contains cells that start with the first period and ends with the last period of the model. Click into the cells to enter each number. The data you enter will also be added to the Value Chart Editor that appears above the Value Table.
Use shortcut "f" to carry the same value forward: When you wish to hold an assumption flat, instead of entering the same value for all the remaining periods for the line item, just enter the shortcut key "f" after the number. For example, if starting in FY 24, you want to enter the value of 55 and your line item extends through FY 30, instead of entering 55 six more times, just type "55f" in the cell for FY 24. The value will be carried forward through to the end of the period: FY 30 in this example.
The Value Chart Editor helps make data entry easier. You can use it to quickly enter data in the Value Table or to modify the data already entered. The Value Chart Editor contains many options to customize the data in the value layer. See Value Chart Editors for more details.
View and Edit data on a Quarterly or Annual basis
If the value layer begins on the first period of a quarter or year and ends on the last period of a quarter or year, you can optionally view the value layer as quarters or years and enter data on a quarterly or annual basis. When a value is entered on a quarterly or annual basis, the values are spread among the periods making up that quarter or year, using the following parameters:
- Spread proportionately or evenly. If proportionately, the value is proportioned according to the previous values. For example, if the new value is doubled the old value, then the values in each period are doubled. If evenly, the old value is ignored and the new value is spread evenly among the periods.
- Round to nearest value allows the value to be distributed in discrete amounts. For example, if you round to the nearest unit and enter an annual value of 25 in a 12 period model, and spread evenly, you will assign a value of 2 to each period. The remainder (in this case 1) is called a leftover. The next parameter says what to do with the leftovers
- After rounding, any leftovers can be removed or assigned to periods near the beginning or end of the quarter or year.
Pasting in data from a spreadsheet
It is possible to copy data from a spreadsheet directly into a value table. Once the copy has been performed in the spreadsheet, place your cursor in one of the cells and select Ctrl-v on your keyboard. The values will be entered in sequential order.
